Genius Envy: Ed Schultz Pads His Resume, Taunts O'Reilly, Steals (Credit for) KFGO's Peabody

What’s more pathetic than a less talented individual taunting a more successful person with his achievements? If that man flaunts an award that isn’t exactly his. Last night on MSNBC’s The Ed Show, Ed Schultz mocked a two-year-old clip of Bill O’Reilly in his “Psycho Talk” segment. Bill’s guest happened to be Ed Schultz, then a nationally syndicated radio talk shot host. In an example of genius envy, Ed pathetically blew up the tiny shot of a Peabody Award situated on a shelf behind him during the interview, circled it like a coach on Monday Night Football, and brayed:
By the way, uh, did you see that video shot, that Peabody, uh yeah, over the shoulder there? Hey O’Reilly – where’s yours?
Somebody used to do play-by-play!
The Peabody Awards give out few individual awards — and Ed Schultz did not receive one of them. The radio station he broadcast from — KFGO-790 AM in Fargo, North Dakota — won a Peabody in 1997 for covering the “Flood of the Century.” Schultz had just joined the KFGO team and assisted in the reporting. Ed’s website claims Schultz “has managed and been lead talent for a broadcast team that has won two Marconis and a prestigious Peabody Award.” Lead talent, eh? The award announcement put Ed’s contribution into perspective:
During the crisis the staff, under the direction of news director Paul Jurgens, maintained round-the-clock coverage. When thousands of residents lost electricity in an early spring blizzard, and many hundreds lost their homes in the subsequent floods, producer Tina Rene and reporters/writers Don Haney, Bonnie Amistadi, Doug Hamilton, Gary Rogers, Sandy Buttweiler, and Ed Schultz kept listeners informed.
Incidentally, KFGO won another Peabody in 1984, when Ed worked at WDAY-TV for its 24-hour coverage of a blizzard. According to Brian Maloney at The Radio Equalizer, Schultz was “canned” from KFGO earlier this year “when, during the height of the Fargo-Moorhead flood threat, he criticized local officials for their preparations and predicted the area would lose the flood fight because of it.”
This is not to diminish the award of Schultz’s part in it. Having been part of an award-winning radio news operation, I know the justifiable pride he would take in it — and the contribution every member of the team makes to win. But Ed tried to intimate that award was his, in order to tweak the most successful man in his third chosen profession (after football and radio).
By the way, did you see O’Reilly’s first-place finish in the Nielsen ratings? The one where The O’Reilly Factor got 6.4 times the audience of The Ed Show?
Hey Schultz — where’s yours?
I may be a little off subject here. Here goes.
I have blogged about Ed Shultz before. MSNBC’s The Ed Show. Should be the Mr. Ed Show, like the horse. Because he is as smart as a horse. If his studio was on fire, he would run back into it. And oh my, lets look at his cohorts. What a line up. Chris Matthews, Hardball. Mr. tough guy, I called his show Hard Head. Constantly interrupts and disrespects his guests. Then we have the ill, mental case, Countdown with Keith Olbermann. This man is sick, maybe he forgets to take his meds. He loves to acidify Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann, he simplify cannot stand to see a conservative woman do well, and if she is smart, oh well, just watch him and you will see. And last and she is the least, a major nothing, Rachel Maddow. Wow what and who is she. She went to Oxford, so I better watch my grammar. These four are the worst news people on cable and their ratings prove that. All I can say is that if you watch them, have your remote control close by, it may save your life.

I loved every word of your comment. The only thing I would add…You forgot David Schuster, he fills in for Olbermann. Please, how has MSNBC found so many of these pseudo-intellectuals without talent commenters? See how quickly I learn…they’re commenters, not journalists.
I hope I’m right when I add, Schuster is the MSNBC “commenter” who said and I paraphrase, the Republican party is nothing but a bunch of old white men. SEXIST! (That’s for you Sara Horowitz)
Ed Schultz has all the charm of a Mafia hit man without the unnecessary intellectual baggage. He makes a Teamster thug look like a guy with style and class.
This guy is such a joke. I’m from Fargo. I have lived here for twenty years and have seen this Ed’s career’s ups and downs. While I was attending NDSU, he was a football announcer. He was let go for attacking a random student after someone threw a bottle into the radio booth (games got pretty rowdy outdoors, during the winter), he screamed obscenities on the air and ran out into the croud and started attacking people, he threw some random kid down the bleachers, the student was all beat up, and lost his wallet, it was a public relations nightmare for the station. I cant remember if he was fired or just asked to leave. Nobody around here would hire him, everyone thinks he’s a freak. Ed was saying, that ND wanted him to run for Conrads seat, good luck with that. He wont run because no one around here would vote for him. We know exactly who he is. I could go on and on about his crazy behavior around town. That’s why he left town. In my opinion MSNBC is a station of zero character, to give a guy like this airtime. This guy was a football announcer! Lets face it, he’s a puppet of the NBC media machine. He does and says what he’s told. He was far right just a few years ago, and praised Rush limbaugh on the radio, now hes as left as you can get. Like I said, he’s a JOKE!

Comparing old Ed’ s intelligence to that of a horse, is insulting to horses everywhere. Where is your common sense in not pointing out that it is only a portion of a horse’s anatomy that comprises the sum total of Shultz’s talent and intelligence. A horse’s ass, full of crap and wind accurately describes Mr. Shultz.
