This poem brought tears to my eyes as I can’t count the number of stray cats, feral and otherwise, I have had in my lifetime.

I’ve buried four, all hit by cars, in my backyard in the last three years.

I am now mother to Momma stray who made a home in a friend’s chicken coup after giving birth to four, two of which I kept. Add to that the stray Apple-head Siamese I’ve had for eight years and the total is four.

Another Mama Cat appeared at our back door last week with 3 kittens in tow. This Mama Cat is bold, like the Mama Cat of the poem. She walks in and out of our house, allows herself to be petted. The kittens are becoming tame. We can now stand close while they eat and they don’t scurry off. jd

I hope you will look into Alley Cat Allies at http://www.alleycat.org and learn more about trap-neuter-release for feral cats. You also will find information about creating a good shelter for feral cats and managing a colony.

The kittens of feral cats can usually be tamed enough to be adoptable if you take them in before they are three or four months old. You must spend time with them every day, but it is worth it and what you learn from the experience will enrich your life forever.

Cats are wonderful.

Our number 1 ” I sleep, therefore I need treats when I wake up”

Cat number 2 “The stomach that walks like a cat”

Thank goodness we don’t spoil our cats.
