Why didn't Media Matters catch Limbaugh's "slavery" quote when he "said" it?

Over at The Corner this morning, Mark Steyn writes:

[Rush Limbaugh] does his show every day with an off-mike black sidekick yakking in his ear (Mr. Snerdley) and he has a black guest-host (the great Walter Williams). More to the point, when I began guest-hosting for Rush, I was amazed to discover that George Soros pays a team of stenographers, many of them called Zachary, to work their tippy-tappy fingers to the bone for three hours transcribing everything Rush or his fill-ins say in the hope that their efforts will one day be rewarded and he will deliver the big career-detonating soundbite.

So isn’t it a little odd that the obsessive compulsives at Media Matters aren’t trumpeting what should be their biggest “gotcha” ever?

I’m talking about the hotly disputed and now possibly actionable rumor making the rounds that Rush Limbaugh once said slavery wasn’t all bad.

Media Matters has just posted a list of Rush Limbaugh’s “racially charged” statements. Notice they didn’t describe them as “racist,” although that is the obvious implication. (You all know the drill…)

Here are some of Limbaughs’ “racially charged” statements, according to Media Matters:

“God does not have a birth certificate. Neither does Obama”; Obama “has yet to prove he’s a citizen.” Limbaugh has also advanced the theory that Obama was not born in the United States, saying that “God does not have a birth certificate. Neither does Obama” and that Obama “has yet to have to prove he’s a citizen. All he’d have to do is show a birth certificate.”

I don’t see the “race” aspect of that quote, but being a conservative, I guess I’m allergic to nuance…

Limbaugh: Gates is an “angry racist.” On July 27, Limbaugh said Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates is an “angry racist.”

So calling someone else a “racist” is now “racist”?

The list makes for tedious reading; many NewsReal readers will no doubt find themselves shrugging, “so what?”

But the notorious “slavery” bit is nowhere to be seen. If anyone should have caught it, it would have been Media Matters, which touts itself as the source for such tidbits.

So either Media Matters isn’t the unimpeachably reliable, all-powerful kicker of rightwing butts that George Soros has invested so much money in.

Or Rush didn’t say it.

Either way, Media Matters is left looking pretty lame.
