Poor Barack Obama. During the President’s recent Sunday morning TV interview circuit, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos was the only questioner ill-mannered enough to ask “The One” a substantive question about the recent House and Senate votes to cut off all federal funding to Obama’s former employer, scandal-plagued ACORN. In response, our ever-genial President politely told the pesky Stephanopoulos that the ACORN scandals — though deemed matters of mighty urgency by both houses of Congress  — weren’t even on his radar, consumed as he was with the truly serious concerns confronting him. “George,” Obama lectured, “this is not the biggest issue facing the country. It’s not something I’m paying a lot of attention to.”
That’s right. Barack Obama is a busy, important man with many weighty matters on his mind. Thus it was the height of unfairness last night for Fox News’ Sean Hannity to call into question the President’s selection of Patrick Gaspard, a longtime high-level ACORN official, as his political affairs director … and as an advisory board member for his White House transition team before that … and as the political director of his 2008 presidential campaign before that.
After all, how could Obama possibly have known that Gaspard was the former New York political director for ACORN? And how could our busy, important President have realized that Gaspard also worked for an ACORN appendage known as the Working Families Party, an outgrowth of the socialist New Party that had endorsed Obama for the Illinois state senate in 1996? Repeat after me:
Only a racist would worry about pro-socialist ACORN operatives gaining a foothold inside the White House and the President’s inner circle. Only a racist would worry about pro-socialist ACORN operatives gaining a foothold inside the White House and the President’s inner circle …
Moreover, we can rest assured that Gaspard’s ties to ACORN are irrelevant in this case because Obama seems largely unaware of ACORN’s activities and agendas. After all, he scarcely appears to know how the group is structured, what it does, or how it is funded. “I didn’t even know that ACORN was gettin’ a whole lot of federal money,†he told Stephanopoulos with wide-eyed innocence.
Sure, bloggers and Internet readers from coast to coast may be well aware of the $53 million in federal funds ACORN has received in recent years, but they aren’t occupied with having to think about all the important things that Barack Obama must contemplate every day. And sure, radio talk-show audiences may know that as a result of Obama’s stimulus package, ACORN was eligible to dip its fingers into an $8.5 billion slush fund for leftwing community organizations. But how could a busy man like Barack Obama have known this? He likely thought ACORN members raised money by selflessly selling their bodily organs on behalf of low-income families.
So what, that beginning in the mid-1980s Obama worked with ACORN, and later with its affiliate voter-mobilization arm Project Vote? So what, that Obama was the attorney for ACORN’s lead election-law cases in the 1990s? So what, that he worked as a trainer at ACORN’s annual conferences, where he taught members of the organization the art of radical community organizing? So what, that in 2007 he told a gathering of ACORN members that he had been “fighting alongside ACORN on issues you care about my entire careerâ€? So what, that in 2008 his presidential campaign gave more than $800,000 to the ACORN front group “Citizens’ Services Inc.” to fund voter-registration efforts? And so what, that at a community organizers’ campaign forum in 2007 he proclaimed:
“[B]efore I even get inaugurated, during the transition we’re gonna be calling all of you in to help us shape the agenda … so that you have input into the agenda for the next presidency of the United States of America”?
Obama was much younger when he said that — scarcely 46 years old. No one should hold him accountable for anything he said way back then. Repeat after me:
Patrick Gaspard’s ties to ACORN are irrelevant. Patrick Gaspard’s ties to ACORN are irrelevant. Patrick Gaspard’s ties to ACORN are irrelevant …
