This I can state with the certainty of experience: With few exceptions, virtually everything you read or heard about Joe McCarthy was written or spoken by the people he was investigating. It brings to mind something I remember from Orwell's "1984." Everyone recalls the most famous quote: "Big Brother is watching you", but this one below is apropos to the McCarthy phenomenon. "Those who control the past, ran the party slogan, control the future--those who control the present control the past." I was a young man when “Tail-gunner Joe” chaired those famous (Infamous?) hearings.

This I can state with the certainty of experience: With few exceptions, virtually everything you read or heard about Joe McCarthy was written or spoken by the people he was investigating.

He was past retirement age but simply wanted to work most of his work was in the courtroom by that time. He got me interested in McCarthy he also had reams of records his take was that McCarthy was absolutely right on practically everything he brought before the house committee. He also thought that he was the imperfect messenger but was courageous. I know that Tail Gunner was right and wanted the best for America. After reading the Verona Papers I am also convinced this gentleman was one of the sources for the book but would not admit it. It went with him to his grave. She was a communist (chairwoman of the party in the US) , even after the atrocities of the Stalinist and Maoist regimes, she died in the USSR and was given a state funeral in Red Square. People in this community, either ignorant or careless of the attrocities of communism, seem to be oblivious to the evil they are courting, as is all those who align themselves with the left. The communists use free speech in the US as a means for taking that freedom from us. The danger is frighteningly more palpable daily. She was outraged, incensed, concerned about the communist menace in the 1950's. The rest of the family had been to college and/or had various other ideas, and so they wrote her off as being not very bright and being concerned with something that just wasn't cool. I am still waiting for Sen. Tydings' recording of Sen. Joe giving an exact number of communists...oh wait, he admitted under oath he never had a recording and that it didn't exist. Either way it doesn't stop leftists from ripping the man a new one... Talk about a guy "taking one for the team". Robert Kennedy, who was also on the commission, remained friends with McCarthy until he died, when he attended McCarthy's funeral. On the other hand, Eisenhower wasn't astute enough, or didn't care enough about the country, to believe McCarthy and rid our government of the people in governmental positions who helped deform this once great country. It was just easier to go with the flow. The people who want to remember what "he did to them personally," might want to look at the House Unamerican Committee, that I THINK was largely responsible for whatever "doing" to people was done.
