Bill already knows the questions, and knows Hill is not an expert on the topics related to the questions. It is, then, far easier to "control" the replies of the guest and highlights Hill's ambiguous replies. I also agree with Horwitz, but I am certain O' Reilly purposely selected this particular person for Hills lack of knowledge on the topic. O' Reilly does not actually interested in "a serious liberal or leftist...." Any time Bill has a serious Leftist on his program, there is much friction and it is important that the "Leftie" not be intimidated by Bill's angry demeanor, but usually ends up being intimidated anyway. The only two I have seen on O' Reilly that could NOT be intimidated were Whoopi Goldberg and Jon Stewart. Bill knew this, of course, and treated these two guests with "kid gloves," indulging their comedic side, not attempting to "rattle" them with his usual "rants and raves." These two people (Goldberg and Stewart), then, are too difficult to aggressively attack on a national broadcast. They are both very bright and informed people, in spite of not being "official experts on a topic." Instead they offer "relevant" topics (translate as "shallow and epheremal"). Now, I'll bet there are a few good, intellectually worthwhile courses that focus on Hip Hop somewhere in the world. Such courses could compare the language of Hip Hop with that of other nihilist movements, for example. Such courses could look at formal musical aspects of the genre. (There is form in Hip Hop). But I am sure that the overwhelming majority of such courses are shallow and vapid. I also think there are a handful of good economics courses and a few good history courses. But most university courses (I am a university professor) are taught be people who are breathtakingly ignorant of their own fields -- particularly the philosophical problems in the foundations of their disciplines. Between Affirmative Action, and suspicious promotion, it's hard to get a qualified candidate to speak on any intelligent subject. O'Reilly places people on his show that at least look "normal" someone like Juan Williams passes this test. Smart and articulate, but not too weird looking. It is hard to listen to scholars if you know or have reason to believe that they have advanced solely because of the color of their skin rather than the content in their minds.
