Union Thug with History of Inciting and Condoning Violence Decries His Critics

If you are among the percentage of the populace that regularly watches the Rachel Maddow show, you know that recently she’s been working herself into a high-pitched, smirking lather over “conservadems”—her pejorative term for Blue Dogs and other Democrats whom Maddow is incensed at for their refusal to roll over and play lapdog for her leftist heroes and their radical agenda. Why, these Democrats have the audacity to actually worry that creating huge new government bureaucracies controlling everything from health care to mortgages, and raising middle-class tax burdens, might not be what this country needs to get out of a recession.

Her recent guest list has been filled with speakers who want to “primary” conservative Democrats and replace them with more leftist politicians. Because, you know, that worked out so wonderfully well with Ned Lamont. Last Friday, she had the possibly-racist and definitely-crazy Jane Hamsher of the Firedoglake blog (best known for championing the aforementioned Lamont, and for her association with pictures posted of Joe Lieberman in blackface). Today, it was new AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

Trumka, of course, was on the show to spout union boilerplate about a variety of leftist bills, including the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Agency, as well as the amazingly Orwellian Employee Free Choice Act, also known as “card check,” or better yet the “just try and say no to a union with our toughs breathing down your neck” bill.

Trumka started off by reciting a sob-story about an anonymous woman in Atlanta who made $1200 a month and received a $900 mortgage. Trumka, of course, went on a rant about how this sort of “predatory lending” necessitates massive new government regulations. Just one problem—Trumka clearly has no idea what predatory lending actually is. Predatory lending would be tricking someone with a high credit score who qualified for a 5% mortgage into a 10% mortgage, or lying about the terms of the loan. Giving someone more house than they can afford isn’t predatory, because it harms the lender as well. Not that Trumka ever disclosed what happened to this woman, but we can assume she was never able to make a payment on her house. Trumka may not be aware of this, but it costs money to foreclose on a home, and in today’s real estate market, the home will certainly be worth less than when it was sold. The situation he described is actually just as detrimental, if not more so, for the lender — who never sees a dime’s return on the money lent to this woman.

Not content to show his ignorance in only one field, Trumka continued. Maddow dutifully lobbed him a softball question: “What do you think about the way union members have been caricatured by the right?”

Trumka naturally brayed his outrage, saying:

“That‘s totally unfair.  They can‘t answer us on the object or the issue itself so they try to minimize us or demonize us.  And we don‘t care about that or what they say.  We know what we‘re doing is right.”

Right, because it was the ordinary citizens at town hall meetings who used ugly and violent tactics in order to squash dissent. Oh, wait. No it wasn’t. That was the unions. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

It seems that being a union leader these days is about having absolutely no shame about your own hypocrisy. Trumka, you see, is no stranger to union violence. In fact, he has repeatedly encouraged and condoned it. It was his own words that exhorted fellow union members to “kick the <bleep> out of” workers and managers alike who didn’t kowtow to his union’s demands. It was his union thugs, with his approval, who shot a man for daring to make a living for himself without the union’s greedy paws in his wallet. That’s in addition to the racketeering and corruption charges, of course.

It’s not a caricature to call a goon a goon. If the union is really so concerned about its image (although if history is any judge, the AFL-CIO is perfectly content to be seen as a group of thugs as long as they get their kickbacks from the left), maybe they would be better served to stop beating up and killing their opponents when they don’t get their way.
