Jimmy Carter's Record on Race

Posted on September 17 2009 11:12 am
Guess who Carter called "the essence of the Democratic Party"?

Guess whom Carter called "the essence of the Democratic Party"?

As Jimmy Carter portrays conservatives as violent racists, it’s worth remembering Carter’s own history of racial demagoguery. Carter campaigned for governor of Georgia as a self-proclaimed “redneck,” in an era when that word had pronounced racial connotations. His campaign distributed a photo of his gubernatorial opponent Carl Sanders being embraced by black basketball players to a Ku Klux Klan rally. Carter pledged to invite Alabama’s infamous segregationist governor George Wallace to Georgia if elected. He once said he was “proud” to have the equally segregationist Lester Maddox as his lieutenant governor following the 1970 election, calling Governor Axe-handle “the essence of the Democratic Party” (which he was).

In 1972, Carter promised – then broke his promise – to the newly crippled Wallace to nominate or second him at the Democratic National Convention in Miami, jumping at the opportunity to give the nomination speech for Henry “Scoop” Jackson (and the national exposure that would bring; see Obama, Barack).

According to his son, Jack Carter, the man from Plains had his surrogates lobby aggressively to become ultra-leftist George McGovern’s vice president. By 1976, “Jimmy Who” had traded his “redneck” status for a pose as the “Born Again” exemplar of the New South.  (His religiosity poll-tested well. He actually won more Southern Baptist votes than Ronald Reagan in 1980.)

Since the country’s near-unanimous repudiation of his presidency, Carter has lashed out at evangelical Christians, conservatives, the late Pope John Paul II, “Neoconservatives,” and anyone else who — well, everyone who isn’t a Southern “progressive” Baptist who admires Liberation Theology. In his 2005 book, Our Endangered Values, he described “fundamentalists” as people who believe “they are right and that anyone who contradicts them is ignorant and possibly evil.” They tend “to demagogue emotional issues.” Moreover, “They are often angry and sometimes resort to verbal or even physical abuse against those who interfere with the implementation of their agenda.”

That sounds very much like the Obama administration’s race-baiting surrogates, including Jimmy Carter, who was willing to stoke those fires when it worked to his advantage.

(For more, read my retrospective of his presidency, probably the second-worst in our history; and my review of Our Endangered Values.)

Historically, most of those Presidents who have shamed us are noted long after they move on, but Jimmy is trying our patience.

Now, THIS is a blockbuster post!

  3. September 17, 2009
    is this not race baiting?

  4. September 17, 2009

To xeno arnold, if Limbaugh acknowledging an obvious truth is “race baiting,” what do you call Carter referring to Obama as “this Black Boy” in August 2008?

Last I heard, referring to an adult Black man as ‘boy’ was equated to using the ‘N’ word.

Maybe Carter should deal with his own racism instead of accusing others who only oppose the man’s ideas.

  5. September 17, 2009

Perhaps all of former President Carter’s talk about other people being racist is his way of venting his own guilt…it you can spread your own shame among the masses, you don’t feel so bad about it.

  6. September 18, 2009

Why should we take seriously the obviously deranged opinions of a senile fool like Jimmy Cater. He insults us twice with his bubble-headed ramblings: first by expressing them to a world-wide audience (his, because of his status as a former POTUS); and secondly because the pathetic fools thinks we will agree with them!

  7. September 18, 2009

I remember that guy jimmy my credit score was 1000 and home loans rates 21%
and no gas in the car.

  8. September 18, 2009

When running for office in Georgia, Carter ran the dirtest of campaigns. I sure as heck did not vote for this human scum. As President he was worse. Since being out of office he has lost all touch with reality.

  9. September 18, 2009

Now that is the Real Jimmy Carter. The peanut picking pestulence of all humanity. The absolute worse we have ever had but I fear our current Dear Leader will make us long for the heady days of jimmy Carter and the 67 degree thermostate 18% inflation, fifty five mile per hour speed limits interest rates that look like basketball scores and the complete demoralization of our military and the contempt of every terrorist on planet earth. God Help Us Pleaseeeee

Sorry, but Liberalism is virulently and viciously anti-white, not anti-black. It is a coalition of disparate groups cynically welded together by the militant left at the point of their shared fear and loathing of white people, a fact that is right out in the open today to a shocking degree. No doubt Carter has apologized profusely over these past embarrassments. Tactically it’s always fun to skewer liberals over their personal hypocrisies on things like race and class (for example Maureen Dowd choosing to live in one of the most segregated areas in the U.S., Georgetown, while divining subtle racism in others), but in the end arguing that Liberals are really anti-black is a bit like arguing Hitler was really anti-German because he caused German cities to be bombed. Well, no.

  11. September 18, 2009

Carter was not in touch with reality even when he was is office. Now, he just seems to have lost the brain filter that prevents the ex-POTUS from hiding what we all knew all along. That he is a dimwit with no sense of shame.

  12. September 19, 2009

Ah yes, the good ole democrat party, birthed in the fight FOR slavery specifically to retain their way of life. Jimmie the redneck would have been right there leading the pack, cone head and all. I never recall hearing him apologize for anything especially ignorance. Then to get religion and suddenly everything is OK. Right! You want a little cheese with your cracker? One has to also remember that this was the man who in the late 70′s, together with Turner, almost gutted the CIA, ordered every covert op to cease and every collector to leave their assignments. There were many an operator that never returned nor were ever heard from again. But remember, he got a presidential library all nicely bought and paid for, oh, and guess who continues to pay him besides the taxpayers he continues to betray, arab oil money. We all wish for favored winds to blow our way, but we can smell the stench of traitordom, because we, unlike some, do not have peanuts up our noses. Justice, it seems, is it’s own Discard. Satire is it’s own Petard.

  13. September 19, 2009

Jimmy Carter loves Barack Obama solely because Obama will surely eclipse Carter as the worst president in American history. But, leftists being leftists, are hypocrites and liars; and you can bet your house on the fact that whatever they are criticizing, they are doing, have done, or will be doing in the future. HYPOCRITES AND LIARS!

  14. September 19, 2009

Try “The Real Jimmy Carter” by the historian and biographer Steven F. Hayward (page 60). In his l960 campaign he wrote to a constituent: I have never had anything but the highest praise for Governor Wallace… I think you will find that … George Wallace and I are in agreement on most issues.” That was Carter’s public position. George Wallace at least apologized for his racist actions.

  15. September 19, 2009

The only thing Jimmy Carter hates more than racists is Jews. When OBL recommends one of your books as required reading, it’s time to take a long, hard look in the mirror.

  16. September 19, 2009

There are three additional elements of Jimmy Carter’s record on race and ethnicity that I believe deserve mention.

I have commented on them on other websites, but no doubt, there are other instances as well. This motor mouth has just never learned to keep his mouth shut, even when the American people ran him out of town in 1980. Or should I say “especially since we ran him out of town?”

In 2004, during the run-up to the presential race, ex-President Carter stood with John Kerry on a podium in Georgia, and repeated a pernitious lie that had been running rampant in far left wing circles — that the Republicans had somehow disenfranchised ONE MILLION black and minority voters in Florida in the 2000 election, on the basis of race. ONE MILLION! Of course, in the preceding four years no proof had ever factually been established that even one black voter had been disenfranchised in Florida on the basis of race in 2000.

Secondly, during his Presidency, Carter insisted in just one of many foreign policy disasters, that the elections held in Zimbabwe in 1979 were not be recognized by the international community because of the “exclusion” of Robert Mugabe, and he forcefully insisted that a subsequent election be held, which occurred in March of 1980, thereby bringing the murderous Marxist Robert Mugabe to power. That thug consolidated his power and eventually turned the country into a total dictatorship. Over the years, Mugabe has become well known as the modern world’s premiere example of a one-man killing spree, even last year reportedly having the wife of his political opponent murdered by cutting off her feet, and then burning her alive with a petrol bomb.

No doubt, the families of Robert Mugabe’s untold victims over the years — black and white alike — would be thrilled to know that the American President whose forceful blundering at the time brought Robert Mugabe to power, is now falsely insisting that Americans opposed to the policies of our current President, are really motivated by racial animus, all evidence to the contrary notwithstanding — including the admission of the current President and his Vice-President on that point!

Finally, his latest book, “Palestine: Peace, Not Apartheid,” is not only considered anti-Semitic in tone by many, it should be recognized that it comes highly recommended by none other than Osama Bin Laden.

One can even read all about it in the liberal press!

Go to, –- on The Lede, at the New York Times, in a piece entitled, “Bin Laden’s Reading List for Americans,” by Sharon Otterman and Robert Mackey.

  17. September 19, 2009

Honestly, as a black amercian conservative man, I am very angry by this former president’s statement. How low could he go?? Here is a guy, who is from the south ,who owned a penut farm that paid black workers very low wages and he wants to be calling some one racist? This was the same guy who got kodos from bin laden for Cater’s statments that the isrelies were racist when isreal has been over backwards to appease the islamic world! I am so sick of liberals and democrates insulting me, a black person, by using that in their aurgument as an attempt to block oppostion (mainly other whites)that they dont like. What Carter did was an act of cowardness by using that statment. Let’s remember the iranians started their revolution under Carter and it was the birth of the hatred towards Americans. Before the Carter administration, their were many iranians going to school here in the the states and it was the Carter administration that gave them their walking papers after the overthrow of a curupted goverment the Carter administration supported! Carter was a failed President and now he’s showing himself to behave like a Coward, as well. Disgraceful!!!

  18. September 19, 2009

Walt “Also, I used to hang out in Democratic Party circles, and some of the remarks made about blacks were not very pretty”

Man , you are so right! I did too! Those things were said by black democrats ,as well. When I was 23 and very naive, I ran with a very liberal(black) woman ,who was from UC Berkly. She was deep into who’s who in the democratic and liberal circles. She would give me all the scoop. Since I was 23 and 10 years younger than she, it was like candy for her. Then I got to know her. Oh my god! Extremely bright academically, very attactive, but crazy as a bat! All of her friends were great at bloviating and looked good doing it too (just as obama), but once they all left the stage ,these people were all opportunist and plum crazy. She and some of her buddies would use the n-word about the same people(mainly all black) who came out to her them speak. It was hysterical to me. I soon wised up and 20 years later i became a conservative. I saw the the light. The Dark is definitely on the left. I saw it first hand. Also, the reason the black cacus wont comment on this is becaue they all serve very poor areas that are 70-90% black. It’s just a shame, becuae it hurt guys like me in the long run!

  19. September 20, 2009

In his 2005 book, Our Endangered Values, he described “fundamentalists” as people who believe “they are right and that anyone who contradicts them is ignorant and possibly evil.”

Which seems to be the attitude of the left these days toward anyone who disagress with them.

  20. September 20, 2009

Great piece, methodically (and concisely) takes Carter apart. The man is so haunted by his complete failure as president that his life is still entirely consumed by it. Your reputation is beyond repair, Jimmy – just try to enjoy your sunset years, in peace and quiet, preferably.

Anyone want to see a vomit-inducing gallery of TIME Magazine’s 26 Obama covers?

  21. September 20, 2009

Carter is the most maligned President in my life time. Even more I would say than Richard Nixon. His quality as a President will be judged by future historians. But his quality as a good and wise man is self-evident. It’s too bad that many Americans cannot take a breath and just listen.

  22. September 20, 2009

    Ronald Reagan.

    Philadelphia, Mississippi.

Do the google, see how they go together.

Then talk to us about presidents and racism.

  23. September 20, 2009

Now there is the perfect liberal argument. Distract, draw attention away from the point and deflect the argument away from your icon, don’t answer the issue, just blame a conservative. They really think that will continue to work. However, we know Mr peanut for what he really is, have not been distracted for the last 30+ years, and will always expose this sort of hypocrisy. Besides it’s fun. Don’t you just love watching them bailing the boat with a bucket full of holes?

  24. September 23, 2009

Just imagine what a resentful, nasty one-termer ex-President Obama will be.

  25. September 17, 2009

Not to make a short answer, but no, it’s not. And, might I add, this article, within its context, is not talking about Rush Limbaugh, but if anyone is doing the baiting, maybe it’s Media Matters.

  26. September 19, 2009

It could be considered race baiting, but it also could be someone (Limbaugh) pointing out the hypocrisy of what is reported in the news and what isn’t, what violent acts are tolerated or not and who gets blamed for what.

  27. September 19, 2009

When was Limbaugh president? Just checking since you equate a talk-radio host with a former president. Back to your parent’s basement! Read a book!

  28. September 17, 2009

    Agreed !

I seem to remember that those guys under the white robes, didn’t only hate jews….

And Carter, a rabid anti-semite if there ever was one, poses as a champion for African Americans…

Methinks that Mr. Peanut Brain doth protest too much…

  29. September 18, 2009

Yeah, but what was your “Misery Index”? LOL

  30. September 18, 2009

I was wondering, what were our thermostats set at before Jimmy? I like mine at 65 in the summer and about 80 in the winter.

  31. September 18, 2009

Actually, Hitler was anti-German in the end. He ordered the flooding of the subways, from his bunker, where Germans were sheltering from the bullets and bombs in Berlin. Hitler felt that the Germans had let him down, and were no longer worthy of life. Fortunately, Albert Speer did not follow this order.

Also, I used to hang out in Democratic Party circles, and some of the remarks made about blacks were not very pretty.

  32. September 19, 2009

So true, he in fact did apologize, I saw the speech. Funny what effect a little piece of lead has on the human body now, isn’t it?

  33. September 19, 2009

Oh, how i miss the days of Billy Beer. The real nuts and bolts Carter. It was so said to see Jimmy express shame for his own flesh and blood, all the while really wishin he could join in the peanuts and beer debates. Although, like most of those Southern Religious zealots of that time, he must surely have graduated to peanuts in his Dr. Pepper. So one has to wonder, just how did we get from there to e coli-tainted goobers?

  34. September 19, 2009

Thank you. I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels Carter is just trying to shed his own built and racism.

  35. September 19, 2009

“built” should be “guilt”. Sigh. I know. “Preview is my friend”.

  36. September 20, 2009

    Whatcha smokin Dave ?

  37. September 20, 2009

Smokin? man this is mainlinein if it’s drip irrigation. I bet you never checked the public contributions record of the Carter Library now did you Dave? I think the words “follow the money” says it clearly. After you read of the tens of millions of dollars funneled into his coffers, from the big money oil arabs, the same big oil arabs that gave us 911, then you can set back and listen with open ears. Perhaps, or look at his historic bigotry. But then the liberals always rewrite history, exclude, alter or just plain ole lie to get their “facts” in their media. Oh, and what wisdom have we ever heard from this crass anti-Semite? That Jews are bad and stole their own land. Revisionists certainly have continued employment with the liberal group. I don’t care what his detractors say, once a cone headed bigot, always one. Justice is it’s own Discard, Satire it’s own Petard.

  38. September 21, 2009

I agree David. You might find the Existentialist Cowboy’s take on JC vs Ronald Reagan interesting.

See: Reagan was no hero but he played one in a movie
