Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page softened the MSM’s portrayal of 9/12 protesters as vile racists last night to suggest another possibility: they may be ignoramuses. David Shuster, filling in for Keith Olbermann on MSNBC’s Countdown, continually baited Page to quantify precisely how “bigotry was fueling this” protest. Clarence Page replied “it’s sad” that, while some of the protesters may be “nutcases”:

A lot of these folks, though, are just plain workaday people, who, uh — I bet a poll would show half of them didn’t know what socialism was, but they know it’s not good and they’re afraid of it, and this is a way to come together with like-minded people. I — I actually feel sorry for them that they aren’t a little better informed.

Page’s condescension toward “just plain workaday people” should be enshrined in the hearts of every American between Farifax and Oakland. The Left, which has long pretended it is the party of “the common man,” disdains the vast majority of Americans as wide-eyed bumpkins. For at least a decade the mainstream media have depicted those who prefer Folger’s to lattes as “largely poor, uneducated, and easy to command.”

The question is whether Page expressed his false pity because of the protesters’ alleged ignorance regarding Das Kapital, or their belief that the Founding Fathers presented something better.

Page proceeded to bash Sen. Jim DeMint, who said there are more freedom-loving people in the heartland than in Congress:

That to me is just plain demagoguery. I can feel sorry for people out that crowd who didn’t know any better, but Jim DeMint knows better, and so do some of the other people up there on that podium talking like that.

Whenever the American people think of the Left, they should remember how the Left views them: with a combination of derision and snobbery.
