White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was interviewed yesterday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” hosted by John King. He was asked to respond to leftist New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd and other media who have characterized protests against President Obama‘s policies as nothing more than manifestations of veiled racism. King asked if the President thinks these attacks are because of his race. Gibbs responded:
“I don’t think the President believes that people are upset because of the color of his skin.”
Gibbs went on to say that people are upset because the economy has been bad. He completely missed that people are also upset because of the President’s leftist policies like his health care program. However, he and Obama deserve some credit for trying to downplay the significance of race as a factor motivating the President’s critics.
Dowd, on the other hand, showed herself to be delusional when she suggested that Congressman Joe Wilson is a racist for calling out the President during the latter’s healthcare speech last Wednesday night. Dowd claimed in her New York Times Op-Ed piece this weekend that Joe Wilson was not just saying, “You lie”, but he was actually saying, “You lied, boy!” She went on to write:
“Some people just can’t believe a black man is president and will never accept it.”
Dowd’s work is drivel. If these people are so serious about the healthcare and economic crises in our country, why do they refuse to debate the issues and instead slur us as racists and bigots? To Maureen Dowd and her like: put down your race cards and turn on your brains.
