I have pointed out in previous posts that the embrace of a communist fanatic by the liberal community and his elevation to the White House was reminiscent of the old popular front of the Thirties, and that the shape of our future would be determined by whether liberals woke up to the problem in their ranks and followed in the footsteps of Walter Reuther and Harry Truman in drawing a sharp line between their liberal faith and that of the communists in their ranks. I drew attention to a statement of Alan Colmes, a decent and honorable liberal who defended Van Jones and identified him as “a mainstream liberal,” which he is not. I can report today the appearance of a forthright denunciation of Jones by a prominent liberal, a friend of Al Gore and White House chief of staff Rahm Emmanuel, but also a friend of mine, Marty Peretz, editor-in-chief of The New Republic. You can read his blog “Cool,… But Yes, Communist” on his website. Marty calls the issue of Jones a matter of “the ethics of politics” and points out that Jones is a racist and an anti-Semite too. Here’s hoping that other liberals listen to what Marty has to say.
