In a recent piece in the Daily Mail, a Muslim woman, Sofia Hayat, discusses a brutal and oppressive upbringing by her parents, which included imprisonment in a cellar and ended in death threats – because Sofia longed to be free.
This brings to mind the battle we are in at the moment with Naomi Wolf, a supposed feminist who should be standing up for persecuted Muslim women but, instead, has reached her hand out in solidarity to their oppressors. This is understandable, of course, because as a leftist, Wolf cannot be honest about the tyranny of an adversarial culture. If she was honest, she would have to accept that Western values in general and American values in particular are something she should be proud of and defend. She would have to concede that America has something to teach other cultures – such as those within Islam where women are persecuted with cruel barbarity. This is unthinkable to her, because then she would have to shed her false personal identity and face banishment from her own leftist community — which allows no divergence of thought. There are millions of Sofia Hayats in our world, suffering under the vicious and barbaric structures of Islamic gender apartheid. This latest tale spoken by Sofia Hayat is heartbreaking. It will be interesting to see how many leftist and feminist authors, sites and journals, which see themselves as women’s rights champions, will be outraged by her story and will denounce, with moral indignation, the theological and cultural ingredients of Islam that engendered her oppression and almost took her life.

Hayat’s story is heartrending on multiple levels, not least because she is evidently still clinging to the idea that Islam is an inherently peaceful religion. Nothing could be further from the truth, as Robert Spencer has so eloquently pointed out in his many speeches, books and articles. The deafening silence of the left on issues of womens’ oppression is an object lesson in their moral blindness.
Women, gays and other minorities who stand with the left make a grave mistake in their implicit apologies for Islamic culture, as they will be the first to be persecuted and murdered under Sharia. That they fail to recognize this while screaming with moral outrage at a laundry list of supposed assaults on their freedom by “Western society” is a wretched commentary on their own inverted sense of morality.
Both Horowitz and Glazov are correct in their observations of the religious fervor with which leftists pursue their agendas. To them “social justice” IS their religion, and is therefore not subject to reason or rationality of any sort. This is what makes the left so dangerous, and why we must never cease fighting them. They are quite content to make incremental progress toward their fantasy of an earthly paradise, sacrificing anyone who gets in their way.
You are so right Mark, and the left seem hell bent on destroying democracy in all western countries and one has to wonder why people are to dumb to see it..
On the subject of Islam, we have to realise that they see us as evil and after all we are.. Look at our TV shows, the sex murdering and violence portrayed there it is no wonder that they want us dead. They see the sex, murder and violence played out on our streets, women walking around in next to nothing showing off what they are offering to any male who is interested, the teaching in our schools of homosexuality and sex education which under the guise of teaching them restraints, encourages children with unbridled hormones to experiment.
Our governments encourage homosexuality by not only bringing in discrimination laws to protect homosexuals but by teaching it in schools, it is an act where disease is rampant and is being passed onto us through bisexuals, where their life span is only about 50 years (ours is 70), but the leftist media do not tell us this. I can see why they want us gone, we are a plague of immorality to them, unfortunately they cant see that their evils are even worse than ours, theirs is encouraged by their religious men ours is encouraged by our governments.
I couldn’t agree with you more, Mark. In my opinion, Islam is not a religion, but a cult. One that worships reputation, oppression of women, and seeks to keep the general populace in a state of stupidity.
I’ve always argued that our country is a christian nation, run by secular leaders, and have fought to keep us from slipping into a theocracy.
The most recent incident relevant to the Muslim practice of Honor Killings for the “crime” of apostasy is the case of the seventeen year old girl Rifqa Bary who is currently in the custody of Florida’s child protective services pending another court hearing to determine if she should be returned to her parents.
Rifqa fled her parents home in Ohio and sought refuse in the home of a Florida Pastor and his wife when her parents discovered that she had converted to Christianity and had been concealing that from them.
In Islam apostasy is punishable by death. Rifqa is afraid for her life. Google Rifqa Bary for the details.
I think her story and Ms Hayat’s might have very much in common and hope, as insensitive as it might sound, that Rifqa’s ends as well; i.e., she survives.
This is the United States of America and the court should let her family know, in no uncertain terms that if she has to go home to her parents and she ends up dead, it is they that will be arrested, tried, convicted, and sent to the supermax prison in colorado. Barring that, we’ll simply take them out back, bathe them in pig blood and bury them alive.
Honor killings aren’t about honor. Honor is very personal. Nobody can tarnish your honor, but you. What they are worried about is reputation.
So it really should be reputation murders.
I read her autobiography “Dishonoured” and it talks about all of this in detail and her triumph. I hope a lot of young muslims have her strength to forge on and be themselves. Let’s hope women everywhere are not afraid to be themselves as Sofia did. Her book is truly inspirational.
It always makes me happy to read about someone who has refused to wear chains, who has refused to allow themselves to be defined by someone else, and who walks in the sunlit world of the free instead of the bleak existence of the disenfranchised.

Gaye – You are correct in your assessment as to the impact of films and TV on these countries. I worked on a film in Egypt last year (this first film shown in Saudi Arabia in 35 years!) and discussed he overall impression that such films gave of the U.S. It was generally quite negative. The violence and sexualization of society was considered to be everywhere in the U.S., a virtual pandemic of immoral behavior and violence. It is a testament to how powerful movies and TV is in terms of perceptions.
