Government-Funded Art Is Ugly and Dangerous

On Wednesday Glenn Beck continued reporting on the story from the previous day’s show which detailed a secret push by the Obama administration to use the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to create (or some would say, maintain) a cult of personality around President Obama.

Beck didn’t say it outright on his TV show, but he seemed to be arguing that using government money to fund the arts is a terrible, dangerous idea inappropriate in a free society and foreign to America.

Beck played some more audio tape of the secret NEA teleconference call in which government officials, artists, and activists outlined how they planned to use government resources to promote the president and his agenda. On the tape, Michael Skolnic, described as political director for activist-musician Russell Simmons, said:

The president has a clear arts agenda and has been very supportive of using art in creative ways to talk about the issues we face here in our country…continue to get involved in those things to support some of the president’s initiatives but to also do things that we are passionate about and to push the president and push his administration.
Beck also played tape of NEA spokesman Yosi Sergant saying:
I would encourage you to pick something. Whether it’s health care, education, the  environment. There’s four key areas that the Corporation has identified as the areas of service. Then my ask would be to apply your artistic, creative community’s utilities. Bring them to the table. Again, I’m really, really honored to be working with you. This is just the beginning. This is the first telephone call of a brand new conversation. We are just now learning how to really bring this community together to speak with the government. What that looks like legally. We’re still trying to figure out the laws of putting government websites on Facebook. And the use of Twitter. This is all being sorted out. We are participating in history as it’s being made. So bear with us as we learn the language so that we can speak to each other safely. And we can really work together to move the needle to get stuff done.

Progressives don’t have a problem with the Obama administration using government resources to promote President Obama and his policies, Beck said. “They’ve been using propaganda since the get-go,” he said.

The Obama administration has also teamed up with far-left groups such as ACORN and Color of Change and environmentalist groups such as Apollo Alliance and Friends of the Earth to attempt to pervert the meaning of 9/11. As reported, another White House-sanctioned teleconference call took place last month, led by Marxist anti-war agitator Rev. Lennox Yearwood, head of the Hip Hop Caucus, aimed at turning Sept. 11 into a National Day of Service focused on spreading environmentalist propaganda. Yearwood works with United for Peace and Justice and International ANSWER, two radical anti-American leftist groups with ties to the dictatorships in North Korea and Cuba.
