In yesterday’s TPMDC Morning RoundUp over at “progressive” blog Talking Points Memo, Eric Kleefeld highlighted an interesting statement that President Obama made.

Congressman Leonard Boswell (D-Des Moines, Iowa) said:

“The president (said), ‘I’m not going to kick the can down the road.’ And he said that and I said, ‘Well, that’s something I’m kind of used to from southern Iowa, you know.  I know about kicking the can down the road.’ And he said, ‘No, if it makes me a one-term president, I’m going to, we’re going to take it on because the country is in need of us taking this on.’ I respected that very much.”

Is the president really prepared to sacrifice a second term in order to pass health care reform? Or is it just rhetoric? Or does he have it backwards? If he fails to pass health care reform will that be so devastating that he won’t be able to win a second term?

Further, even if he is willing to throw himself under the bus to get this piece of his agenda passed, are congressional Democrats willing to join him? In their most recent NewsReal post Tim and Alissa Birkel highly doubt it.
