“But understand this: There will be terrifying times in the last days. People will be self-centered and lovers of money, proud, haughty, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, irreligious, callous, implacable, slanderous, licentious, brutal, hating what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, as they make a pretense of religion but deny its power. Reject them.” (2 Timothy 3:1-5)

I've always felt that for many on the Left, their political activism is a substitute for religion. All of us need spiritual fullfillment. A lucky few get it through love, or art/music, or some other form. For the majority, religion was historically a major source of spiritual fullfillment. But, with the decline of religion, mankind has vast numbers of people who are spiritually empty. In my opinion, these people have found a source of spiritual fullfillment by grasping utopian political ideologies of the Left.

And like fundamentalist religions, the utopianist of the Left operates on blind faith, driven by slogans and "truths". They cannot tolerate any dissent, have forms of atonement (driving high mpg cars, not eating meat, etc.), and promise redemption and a form of heaven (the utopia that will exist once their political policies are implemented).

So...radical Leftism is basically a secular religion, and as such is basically irrational.

I would guess that the vast majority of leftists are ignorant, not malicious. When you look at what is taught in the schools and the colleges, what the mainstream media puts out, what comes out of virtually every major institution in our country, it is a miracle that more people are not leftists. The problem is getting people to accept facts that go contrary to what they have learned all their lives.

To give a small example: A neighbor, who is not very leftist at all in many matters, said in a conversation that Europeans brought disease to the Indians. Oops, Native Americans. I said that Europeans brought smallpox and measles, but Europeans got syphilis from the Indians. She refused to believe it. Why? She couldn't say. Native Americans are by definition pure and innocent and Europeans corrupt and aggressive; that's what she's learned.

So just bringing facts to the opposition in a convincing way is helpful for a start. They are more likely to accept unaccustomed facts if they have already seen that they have been lied to. This is why Obama's deceitfulness points to his downfall. People are seeing that he is lying about health care, for instance, and this is why many previous Obama supporters are among those now questioning him.
