After being found guilty last year of conspiring to provide material support to Hamas and other terrorist groups, Shukri Abu-Baker and Ghassan Elashi, founding members of the terror-supporting front group Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF), were each sentenced yesterday to 65 years in prison.

Abu-Baker and Elashi had illegally funneled more than $12 million to the genocidal terrorist organization Hamas over a six-year period, under the ruse of sending small amounts of money to innocuous, non-Palestinian organizations while giving the bulk of the funds to the terrorists. As Shukri Abu-Baker told his underlings: “We can give $100,000 to the Islamists and $5,000 to the others.”

Another HLF program, masquerading as charitable support for needy families and orphans in Palestinian territories, is said to have channeled money to families whose relatives had been killed or captured while waging jihad; some of them were suicide bombers. Sometimes Holy Land officials sent money to those families directly.

Originally known as the “Occupied Land Fund,” HLF billed itself as America’s largest Islamic charity. It purported to help needy Palestinian Muslims in Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and the Palestinian Authority (PA). “Our mission,” stated its website, “is to find and implement practical solutions for human suffering through humanitarian programs that impact the lives of the disadvantaged, disinherited, and displaced peoples suffering from man-made and natural disasters.” In reality, it circumvented U.S. laws and was shown to be a direct source of funds for anti-American Islamic terror groups.

U.S. federal authorities began monitoring HLF in 1996. In 2001, federal anti-terrorism agents raided a company that ran HLF’s website, seizing their web server. In addition to incriminating evidence of the funding of terrorists by HLF, the FBI found that HLF’s server was used also by the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the Islamic Society of North America, the Muslim Students’ Association of the U.S. and Canada, the Islamic Circle of North America, the Islamic Association for Palestine, and American Muslims for Jerusalem, all like-minded organizations that have actively supported Hamas and other terrorist groups.

The arrests and convictions of these individuals is a welcome development which will hopefully lead to the complete shuttering of these types of anti-American, terror-supporting “relief” organizations.
