Nancy Pelosi, Liar

Until recently, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a self-absorbed egomaniac with a long history of shifting her political positions according to the dictates of expediency, was demanding that an independent commission be convened to investigate Bush administration officials and lawyers who had been involved in drafting the enhanced-interrogation methods (most notably waterboarding) that were used on some Islamic terror suspects. Claiming to have been shocked and outraged upon learning that these tactics had actually been used, Pelosi demanded that the perpetrators of such “torture” face stiff and swift punishment.

Then last month, when reports first surfaced that Pelosi may have known all along that waterboarding and other supposedly objectionable techniques had been employed against a few known terrorists, the Speaker vehemently denied ever having been briefed about that reality — particularly as regards Islamic terror suspect Abu Zubaydah (the bloodthirsty operational planner for al Qaeda).

With her finger wagging righteously, Pelosi told reporters: “[W]e were not, and I repeat, were not told that waterboarding or any of these other enhanced interrogation techniques were used. What they did tell us is that they had some legislative counsel . . . opinions that they [those techniques] could be used, but not that they would [be used].”

But now we know that Pelosi was lying. According to a National Intelligence Office report obtained by FOX News, “Speaker Nancy Pelosi was briefed in September 2002 on the use of enhanced interrogation techniques.” Likewise, the Washington Post reports that when Pelosi was “given a virtual tour of the CIA’s overseas detention sites and the harsh techniques [including waterboarding] interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk,” neither she nor any other members of Congress raised even a single objection. Adds the Post:

“Instead, at least two lawmakers in the room asked the CIA to push harder, two U.S. officials said. ‘The briefer was specifically asked if the methods were tough enough,’ said a U.S. official who witnessed the exchange.”

Going forward, it will be most interesting to watch Pelosi try to cover up her past lies with an endless parade of new ones.
