Egypt in Hezbollah's Crosshairs

Egypt has announced that it has uncovered, operating within its borders, a covert cell run by the Iranian-funded terrorist group Hezbollah. This cell was plotting to smuggle weapons into the Gaza Strip, attack Israeli tourist sites in the Sinai Peninsula, and possibly destroy a large ship passing through the Suez Canal—an act that could have crippled Egypt’s economy and destabilized trade in the region.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who has publicly exhorted Palestinians to make extensive use of suicide bombings and has called for the destruction of both America and Israel, confirms that the leader of the terror cell was a Hezbollah member named Sami Shihab.

Hezbollah, which is used by Iran as a pawn in areas where that nation is vying to become a dominant player, has one goal first and foremost: the destruction of Israel. The organization’s founding statement makes this quite clear:

“We see in Israel the vanguard of the United States in our Islamic world. It is the hated enemy that must be fought until the hated ones get what they deserve…. Our primary assumption in our fight against Israel states that the Zionist entity is aggressive from its inception, and built on lands wrested from their owners, at the expense of the rights of the Muslim people. Therefore our struggle will end only when this entity is obliterated. We recognize no treaty with it, no cease fire, and no peace agreements, whether separate or consolidated. We vigorously condemn all plans for negotiation with Israel, and regard all negotiators as enemies, for the reason that such negotiation is nothing but the recognition of the legitimacy of the Zionist occupation of Palestine.”

Hezbollah and Iran are galled by the fact that Egypt maintains diplomatic relations with Israel. They loathe Egypt for helping Israel halt the process by which Iran not only arms Hezbollah directly, but also uses Hezbollah as an intermediary to smuggle additional arms to Hamas, yet another organization of genocidal Palestinian terrorists.

By establishing sleeper cells on Egyptian soil, Iran can later mobilize them to perform terrorist acts within Egypt and thereby destabilize the Egyptian government. Why should we in the West care about any of this? If the cells are successful in destabilizing Egypt enough so that its government collapses, Israel and the United States could find themselves facing a new enemy—an Egypt allied with Iran and possessing billions of dollars’ worth of the latest American weapons systems. That would be a nightmare.
