Obama to Illegals: Stay, Please Stay

The New York Times, whose op-ed page is dominated by leftists such as Frank Rich, Maureen Dowd and Paul Krugman, reports that President Barack Obama plans to begin overhauling America’s immigration system this year, and to pave a path by which an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants, most of whom are Hispanics, can become “legal.”

Oh, and by the way, Hispanics voted overwhelmingly for Mr. Obama in the 2008 presidential election, just as they similarly had supported John Kerry four years earlier. Isn’t it downright inspiring to see a presidential administration unfetter itself from trivia like the fulfillment of its obligation to protect and defend the United States, while putting its energies into something really important: the creation of a permanent bloc of 12 million additional Democrat voters?

While acknowledging that the recession will make the political battle to pass immigration legislation more difficult, President Obama is undeterred and will frame the new effort as “policy reform that controls immigration and makes it an orderly system,” according to an administration official. “I know this is an emotional issue,” says the President. “I know it’s a controversial issue. I know that the people get real riled up politically about this.” He reminds us, however, that immigrants who lack legal status “have to have some mechanism over time to get out of the shadows.”

Wouldn’t deportation accomplish the goal of getting them “out of the shadows”? Certainly, but Obama says deportation is not even remotely an option. Incidentally, The President’s approach has been taken up with great enthusiasm by another open-borders luminary, Representative Luis V. Gutierrez (D-Illinois), who pressured Bill Clinton to free 16 convicted FALN terrorists in 1999, and who has consistently advocated amnesty for illegal aliens.
