Chavez vs. Obama: Battle of Western Hemisphere Socialists

President Barack Obama has just completed his tour of Europe and the Middle East, during which he spelled out his vision of a new world order. Obama spent most of the trip apologizing to international leaders for America’s past transgressions; he was snubbed by each of those leaders when he requested that they contribute thousands of additional troops to the ongoing military campaign in Afghanistan (although Belgium offered to send 35 military trainers and Spain offered 12); he was rebuffed by Germany, France and others for his proposal of a worldwide spending spree to stimulate economic growth; and he ended the trip by bowing submissively before the King of Saudi Arabia.

There were, however, many great photo ops for our President, and he mesmerized a number of adoring crowds by reading, with considerable stylistic skill, the flowery prose of his speechwriters as their words crawled across his teleprompter screen. So although he came home empty-handed in terms of any substantive agreements with other governments, he did come home to higher ratings in the polls. By Obama’s standards, then, the trip was a great success.

One person who seems to be unimpressed with the adulation showered upon Obama by groupies the world over is Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who, you may recall, recently called Obama “a poor ignoramus” who “should read and study a little to understand reality.” The megalomaniacal Chavez, who heads a group of leftwing Latin American leaders opposed to U.S. influence in the region, is clearly disturbed by this upstart Yankee socialist stealing his thunder on the world stage.

In response, Chavez has embarked on a little tour of his own. And guess what? He too has a vision of a “new world order.” After meeting last week with his terror-supporting Iranian allies (and telling them that he has little hope of better relations with Washington under President Obama), he is now in Communist China, meeting with President-for-life and Communist Party leader Hu Jintao. “We are creating a new world, a balanced world,” says Chavez. “A new world order, a multipolar world. The unipolar world has collapsed. The power of the U.S. empire has collapsed.”

Two personalities adored by the socialist left—Chavez and Obama—are vying for influence on the world stage. Yet remarkably, many American supporters of Obama still do not recognize the fact that he is indeed a socialist.
